Conservation Specification
The importance of a correctly detailed conservation specification cannot be stressed enough.
The specification provides the builder with a step by step guide on all the building works.
A methodology is devised for the structure that gives a description of the materials, products, method and equipment employed for the relevant treatment.
The conservation specification for the external envelope of the structure typically includes;
- Roofs - including slates, chimneys, flaunching, leadwork and timber sub-structures
- Treatment and repair of rainwater system, including ironwork, detailing and lead flashing.
- Windows – repair or replacement specification to joinery, glazing, cills & surrounds
- Masonry – repairs, replacement and consolidation of stonework, brick and renders.
- Cleaning specification for removal of all staining forms. The most common being carbon staining, gypsum crusts, efflorescence, water staining, graffiti, ferrous staining etc
- Paint removal & aftercare.
- Specification of mortars and render.
- Specification of stone, including performance testing of newly quarried stone, finishes and indenting.
- Correctional specification for removal of inappropriate materials on historic properties such as cement renders & pointing, over-painting with non-breathable paints, unsuitable repairs etc.
- Treatment of decorative ironwork.
The conservation specification to the internal areas of the structure predominately address issues of damp, decorative plasterwork, lathe & plaster detailing, historic paint analysis, internal joinery and appropriate sensitive methodology for insertion of modern interventions.
